Just For Today . . .Empty Things . . . 4/12/09

Dear Holy Friends,
He is risen, He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!

In His Grip, Chandra

Empty Things

Empty milk carton placed back in the fridge
    means Mama's gonna be mad . . .
Empty wallet or checkbook
bill paying will be bad . . .
Empty pantry and freezer
    supper must be creative . . .
Empty gas tank in the car
    arrival is tentative . . .

Empty room where the college boy slept
    means that he grew . . .
Empty bed where the spouse used to be
    lonely is something new . . .
Empty heart, no hope at all
the world broke that one down . . .
Empty life, no joy or love
    depression threatens to drown . . .

Empty tomb, the stone rolled away
Jesus rose victor over sin . . .
Emptied  because of perfect love
we never have to be empty again . . .

Just For Today . . .One day between . . .4/11/09

Dear Holy Friends,
There was Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday as some call it. Yesterday we had Good Friday. Tomorrow we have Easter or Resurrection Sunday. So what is today? Somehow I have a feeling this day was darker for His followers than the three hours the sun disappeared while He hung on the cross.

In His Grip, Chandra

the day between

did they look up at the hill with sorrow
or did they try to stay away
did they slowly find each other
and cling together that day?
were there words of comfort shared
or was there nothing to say?
how did they deal with the fact
they had scattered and run away?
He was dead, the cross was bare
and what had each of them done?
In His hardest moments, His heart breaking
most of them had turned and run.
They knew His promise, he would rise again
but how was that going to be?
He was dead, He was gone, they were alone
what in the world did they do?
May I never forget this day between
He was in the grave for me too.

JUst For Today . . .Mid Week Reflections . . . 4/8/09

Dear Holy Friends,
Hump day. I'm not sure that was a good term for Jesus. It was his last day of normal life. And you know what? If you read the chronology of that last week, the Bible doesn't really tell us what He did that day. Maybe He spent it quietly with loved ones?

In His Grip, Chandra

Mid Week Reflections

Mid-week, I wonder when did He wake?
He knew tomorrow would bring heartbreak.
Did He lie there wishing it would go away?
Or did He seek moments of joy during the day?
He knew tomorrow, He would be betrayed
did He have to watch the things he had to say?
Did He wish to talk to Judas and change his mind?
Did He know loyalty from loved ones he wouldn't find?

I sit here dealing with my life and my stuff
I tell myself it's hard, it's rough.
But looking at the cross I see two things there,
mercy and grace through the Father's loving care.
Mercy flowed to me as He took away my sin,
he hung up there so I might enter in.
Grace washes over my heart and my soul,
may I never forget what he did to make me whole.

a book review

I just finished reading a beautiful book. If you are a fan of Max Lucado, His Name Is Jesus would be a wonderful addition to your home library. This hard bound compilation of writings from twenty of his books spanning the years 1990-2007 is an inspiration. The writing alone is masterful. I don't think there is a modern author who can more clearly define, describe, and explain scriptures than Max Lucado.

In addition to the excellent selection of writings in the book, there are selected scriptures which fit perfectly and beautiful photography and illustrations. I highly recommend this book for your own reading pleasure. It would also make a perfect gift. Thomas Nelson Publishing did a beautiful thing with this book.

Just For Today . . .The Days Between . . .4/6/09

Dear Holy Friends,
He went into town, knowing He would not leave. He knew what was to come. And I believe, if we take the time to look at what He did each day the last week of His life we can get one of the most beautiful pictures of what grace really is.

In His Grip, Chandra

The Days Between

He entered town in honor and victory
    crowd singing jubilant song
They waved, cheered, and shouted
how could it go so wrong?
Yet, amidst the joy of that day
He knew what was to come
How could He smile and celebrate
    knowing what would be done?

Still, He rode in with great joy
    loving everyone He met
Could any of us do something like that
love those we knew would forget?
I think of how He spent His last week
    healing, teaching, doing miraculous things
I wonder if I could give my self like that
knowing what week's end would bring.

Yesterday, we remembered His triumphal entry
it was a joyous and happy day
Next week we celebrate His resurrection
He rose from death to provide us the Way.
But we mustn't forget the days between
which He walked with mercy and grace
Because of Him and all that He did
in heaven I have a place.
