Just For Today . . . The Brother's Empty Nest . . . 2/16/09

Dear Holy friends,
I have been blessed to watch my four sons grow up and thoroughly enjoy being brothers. So many families deal with constant sibling problems. I have four sons who love each other and truly enjoy doing things together. Why, this summer Brandon, Garrett, and Eric are all three working together at the boy scout camp to be together! I am sure Adam will visit them frequently.
The downside of their closeness is watching Adam have his brothers grow up and go one at a time. Yesterday I sat in the car before church with a very teary youngest son once again trying to prepare himself to have none of his brothers home next year. His nest is emptying too.

The Brother's Empty Nest

they grow up and move away
    all but the last one
can't help but be glad he stays
but I see what being last has done
brothers who were always there
    one by one go away
what do I do to help him
    get through the lonely days
a house once filled with four boys
    now comes to only him
how does he find what that means
    where will he fit in
the brother's nest gets empty
he must find who he is
and when his heart is lonely
can't see the good from this
not sure there's something harder
    than boys growing away
except maybe being the youngest
when he's the one who stays
